VPN with a Japan server: understand the connection

A VPN server location tells you where the tunnel's remote endpoint is provided. It does not tell you how quickly every website will respond, how every application will behave or where every organisation involved in a connection stores its data. Those questions need separate answers.

ZARDO currently has one confirmed VPN server location: Japan. There is no claim here of a worldwide location selector or a timetable for additional countries. If a Japan endpoint fits your needs, evaluate the actual connection from your own device and network, and read the service's server information alongside its privacy information.

Follow the path of a connection

For traffic routed into the VPN, the app establishes an encrypted tunnel between your device and the VPN server. The server is an intermediate point on the way to the destination. A website connection continues beyond that endpoint, so the tunnel should not be described as encrypting the entire path through to every website.

HTTPS provides a separate protection layer for a website connection. Continue checking addresses and taking certificate warnings seriously even when a VPN is connected. A server located in Japan does not establish that a page is authentic or that a file offered by a website is safe.

ZARDO uses AmneziaWG, a WireGuard-based protocol. Its tunnel traffic is protected with ChaCha20-Poly1305 authenticated encryption and Curve25519 key exchange. Those are properties of the tunnel mechanism, not promises about the behaviour of every destination or the trustworthiness of content beyond the endpoint.

Separate location from performance

A location label cannot replace a measurement. Your connection uses a local network, an internet provider and a route to the VPN endpoint before reaching a destination. A delay can arise at several places along that path.

For an everyday comparison, use the same device and ordinary HTTPS destination before and after connecting. Keep the test close in time and avoid changing several settings at once. Note whether you were using Wi-Fi or mobile data, because changing the underlying network changes the comparison.

Record a practical outcome such as whether a page loaded successfully or a familiar account task completed. One unusually quick or slow attempt is weak evidence. Avoid turning a single observation into a numerical promise for another person, another country or another time of day.

Check whether the connection actually uses the tunnel

The current Android app supports routing modes and app exclusions. An excluded app or connection can use your normal internet connection. Consequently, a connected indicator and a Japan server label do not establish that every connection on the device is travelling through that endpoint.

Review the routing configuration before interpreting a test. If you intentionally excluded an application, its ordinary network behaviour is not evidence that the tunnel failed. Conversely, do not assume an application is included merely because another application is using the VPN successfully.

This distinction also matters when comparing two phones. They may use the same account but have different routing selections. Keep the app version and routing mode in your notes, and avoid sharing diagnostic screenshots that reveal account details, addresses or credentials unnecessarily.

Treat one location as a real service limit

With one confirmed location, there is no verified second country to choose if the Japan endpoint does not suit your route. Decide whether that limitation is acceptable before committing to a long term. Do not choose a service on the assumption that an unannounced location will arrive later.

A location is also not a guarantee about how a destination categorises a connection. Websites can apply their own account, security and payment checks. A VPN connection does not remove the need to follow those services' conditions or to maintain access to your own account recovery methods.

The download page should be checked separately. Android is published; a TV interface exists in the APK, while physical TV acceptance remains unconfirmed. A completed new Windows release is unconfirmed. A server endpoint alone does not supply software for every device you own.

Understand operational data separately

The server's country is not a complete privacy policy. ZARDO retains account, subscription and payment records, device and connection records, last-handshake timestamps, diagnostics and operational website logs. Some records are also included in backups.

The current service does not operate under a zero-logs policy. Retention differs by category, and configured cleanup periods should not be read as proof that every copy of every record disappears at the same moment. Review the available privacy details and look for unresolved questions before assuming a stronger privacy guarantee.

A proposal to move part of the service elsewhere would be a future architectural decision. It should not be described as already deployed simply because it appears in planning material. Evaluate the actual current service rather than combining its present endpoint with an imagined future control plane.

Make a small, interpretable evaluation

Prepare the device, check the supported release, confirm ordinary internet access and connect once. Observe the outcome of an ordinary task, then disconnect and confirm the device returns to its expected network state. If a problem occurs, describe the stage rather than repeatedly changing settings.

The current Android release does not support Android Always-on VPN or the system's “Block connections without VPN” mode. It does not guarantee that internet access stays blocked when the VPN disconnects. That limit belongs in your decision alongside location and performance.

For an evaluation during the verified 72-hour trial, remember that time starts when registration is completed. It does not wait for a first connection. When you have checked the practical result and the stated limits, use the pricing information to review the available terms without assuming that a preview changes your account.
